Some artists work with paint and others work with clay.
Shane Brooks, owner of Shane Brooks Landscaping, uses the natural world as his canvas, and his landscape designs becoming living works of art.
He can bring paradise into a backyard area.
Also known as Brooks Landscape and Pools, Brooks found his passion for using nature to create beautiful spaces while working at a nursery during high school. After high school, he owned multiple wholesale tree farm operations.
But, if you ever travel down the Bricktown Canal and marvel at how pretty the land looks, you have Brooks to thank.
“I did the south canal in 2000,” Brooks said. “It was the first major MAPS project, so it was key. If it didn’t go right, then the taxpayers wouldn’t do another MAPS. I did the landscaping and irrigation for the south canal. At the time, nothing was there. Bass Pro and the Boathouse District were not there. It’s amazing to see what it’s become, and the trees are so big now.”
Since then, Brooks has spearheaded some of the largest landscaping and beautification projects in the state of Oklahoma. In 2003, he was chosen as the landscaper for the Bottomland Hardwood Restoration Project along the Oklahoma River, which is, to date, the largest landscaping project ever done in Oklahoma.
“We planted 4,800 trees,” said Brooks. “Basically, we helped restore the area with beautification. The boathouses there came later.”
But now, Brooks wants to focus on bringing that beauty into backyards, an area he’s particularly passionate about.
“I like building backyards because I love seeing kids swim and play in that space,” he said. “I specialize in outdoor living, which is becoming more and more critical for people. We see more and more people spend money on outdoor kitchens, fire pits, waterfalls, pools, beaches in pools, cabanas…”
From curved pergolas to outdoor audio systems to pools that look like they were stolen from a hidden Eden in Costa Rica, Brooks builds living areas that are serene, low-maintenance and functional. He also specializes in large specimen trees and he hand-selects every specimen he plants.
“Why is it important?” he said. “What do you come home to every day? Making your home beautiful is the best investment you can make. If you dream it, I can build it.”
