October is here and Old Man Winter will soon be knocking on our doors. Layers of sunny autumn afternoons now stretch lazily between the chill of crisp fall mornings and cool evenings. The clock is ticking, so if you’re looking to get in a few more outdoor excursions with the family, perhaps it’s time to tell them to just get lost? In a good old-fashioned corn maze, that is. Oklahoma’s flat farmland provides the perfect landscape for some of the coolest corn mazes and pumpkin patches in the country. So whether you’d like to lose yourself in corn or find yourself in a pumpkin patch, we’ve comprised a list that contains the best of both, just for you.
The Orr Family Farm
It’s all about the corn at Orr Family Farm located at 14400 S. Western Ave, Oklahoma City. Here, the sprawling corn maze with the Maize-o-Vision secret decoders are just part of the fun. Visitors can also grab a bucket and a shovel and get ankle deep in the corn crib (much like a sandbox), take a whack at the corn ball (think volleyball!), get some air on the giant jumping pillows, feed friendly animals at the animal barn, throw a pole in the fishing pond, play a host of other games and choose a ripe pumpkin from the patch. Other activities include train rides, zip lines, and a carousel. Visit orrfamilyfarm.com for hours of operation and pricing.
P Bar Farms
Located off the famous Route 66 in Weatherford, P Bar Farms made the 2014 USA Today’s list of ten best fall corn mazes for families. Each fall, P Bar Farms chooses an exciting new theme for their famous corn maze. This year, they’ve teamed up with Sam Noble Museum to create the dinosaur-themed maze called Lost in Time. Complete with 3.5 miles of twisting and turning trails and about 100 decision points, you’re sure to get lost for at least an hour or more. The scary part? During October, half of the maze becomes frightfully haunted after sunset.
While the corn maze is a huge attraction, P Bar Farms also offers hayrides to the pumpkin patch where folks can handpick their very own pumpkins. Other non-corny activities include train rides, a barnyard animal petting area, a playground, zombie hunting expedition laser tag ride, mini golf, the “Amazing Freak Show” haunted house, and the brand new mining sluice, where folks can pan for treasures. Red Silo Productions at Reding Farm
Reding Farm, located at 614 Reding Road in Chickasha, bills itself as the “largest corn maize in Oklahoma.” With over 35 acres of corn maizes, Red Silo Productions @ Reding Farm boasts a challenge to visitors to navigate its baffling network of dead ends and pathways. Kicking off to a great start, this year’s theme is Oklahoma Football. But the team spirit turns a little dark each Friday and Saturday evening throughout October when the maize becomes infiltrated with haunts and ghouls. Guaranteed to “scare your socks” right off your feet, you might want to think about wearing your thickest pair.
If that’s not your thing, a host of family-friendly activities include a corn cannon, farm animals, hayrides, pumpkin patch, a cow train, and this year’s crowd favorite, the “Dairy Go Round.” Visit redsiloproductions.com for more information.
Parkhurst Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze
The Parkhurst Pumpkin Patch is the place to go if you are looking to spend one of those peaceful fall days outdoors. Boasting clean, country air, activities range from pony riding and bunny holding to just relaxing next to the fire pit and roasting hot dogs. You won’t want to miss the corn maze, the fun fort or a good old-fashioned push on the hay bale swing. Each park admission is eligible to snatch one free pumpkin from the patch. The Parkhurst Ranch is located at 720 S. Henny Rd. Arcadia. You can find more information by visiting parkhurstranch.com.
TG Farms—Pumpkin Patch
TG Farms offers locations in Norman and Newcastle and is open seven days a week during the fall. Admission covers choice of one free pumpkin from the pumpkin patch. TG Farms offers a host of activities for all ages. Visitors can navigate the corn maze or the hay maze, enjoy the petting zoo, relax on a tractor drawn hayride, play on the giant hay jump and slide, speed around the tricycle race track, feed the ducks at the duck pond or enjoy a pony ride. A concession stand and a gift shop are also available. More information, including directions to both locations, can be found at tgfarms.com.
Sunshine Shelly’s Pumpkin Patch
Last but not least, you may want to head out to Sunshine Shelly’s Pumpkin Patch. The name alone sounds warm and inviting and well, like a happy place. Sunshine Shelly’s Pumpkin Patch is located at 7110 N. Harrison in Shawnee. With 12 acres of pumpkins to choose from, guests are sure to find the perfect one. Other activities include a 4-acre maze, hayride, pony ride/water rollers, kiddie train, plenty of games for kids and a concession stand.
