Pumpkins, candy corn and your yearly sugar coma are just around the corner. If you have little ones (or even if you don’t), Halloween is hardly optional, because who doesn’t love to purge on candy and dress up like a hotdog?

Going door-to-door with the kiddos can be a blast, but we want you to get the most out of your Halloween. Aside from reminding you to sneak the chocolate bars out of their buckets for your own enjoyment, here are a few safety guidelines to follow to ensure trick-or-treating stays pleasant:
Stay on the sidewalk as much as possible.
Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Go in groups and with trusted adults.
Flashlights and reflective tape will help drivers see you.
Eat wrapped candy ONLY. Avoid homemade treats and opened wrappers.
Stick to your town’s specified trick-or-treating dates and times. Be respectful.
Take a cellular phone.
Route your trick-or-treating beforehand to avoid walking too long or getting lost.
Enter homes ONLY with a trusted adult. Never accept rides with strangers.
Examine candy for choking hazards, especially if you have toddlers.
Tell someone where you will be/what streets you’re trick-or-treating.
Skip houses that are not well lit.
Just in case door-to-door trick-or-treating isn’t your thing, we’ve compiled a list of family-friendly Halloween activities happening around the metro.
